On a Texas ranch, the important inspection may begin with something easy to miss: a small wound, a restless animal, a closer look before the herd moves on. New World screwworm is a fly, but its consequences arrive at the scale of livestock management.
Confirmed cases in Texas have reached 42, with 10 still active as of July 21, according to the latest Texas case tally. The count makes the outbreak less like a single border incident and more like a moving animal-health problem, one that depends on finding infestations before they travel.
A pest with an old American history
The United States eradicated New World screwworm in 1966. Its return is consequential because the pest can threaten livestock, turning routine animal care into a line of defense against a disease-management problem with economic consequences for ranches and the wider cattle supply chain.
The public-health picture is narrower than the livestock concern. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the current risk to people and animals in the U.S. is very low, and reports no locally acquired human infestations. USDA confirmed the first U.S. animal case in the current outbreak on June 3.
Sterile flies take the field
The response is built around surveillance and population control rather than a single treatment at the ranch gate. USDA is releasing sterile flies across Texas, a tactic intended to reduce successful reproduction when the released insects mate with wild screwworm flies. The approach is laborious and faintly counterintuitive: add more flies in order to get fewer flies later.
That strategy gives animal-health officials another tool while producers remain responsible for noticing suspicious wounds, limiting unnecessary animal movement, and reporting potential infestations through veterinary channels. The federal sterile-fly effort is meant to work across that network, not replace it.
For livestock operations, the practical question is less whether a fly can cross a county line than how quickly a possible case is recognized. Records of animal movements, regular inspections, and quick communication with veterinarians become useful pieces of outbreak control, especially in areas where cattle, wildlife, and international trade routes overlap.
The case total will matter, but so will its shape: where new detections appear, how long cases remain active, and whether sterile-fly releases can interrupt transmission without creating gaps in field surveillance. A pest once relegated to eradication history is now back in the paperwork of Texas livestock production.
