A fig can look perfectly ordinary while the problem has already moved inside it. That is the particular unpleasantness of invasive fruit flies: the first evidence may arrive after the fruit has begun to soften, when larvae are already feeding beneath the skin. In Alameda County, UC Agriculture and Natural Resources has reported the black fig fly, a pest that feeds and reproduces only on figs.

The concern reaches well beyond one fruit or one backyard tree. Mediterranean, Mexican, and Oriental fruit flies can damage more than 250 types of produce, a broad target for a state whose specialty-crop map runs from coastal berries to San Joaquin Valley orchards.

A Statewide Net of Traps

The California Department of Food and Agriculture has placed more than 100,000 traps around the state to look for these insects. The traps are easy to overlook beside a field road or in a residential tree, which is part of the point: invasive pests do not respect the line between a commercial block and a home garden.

Their range of hosts makes timing and identification matter. A UC ANR guide describes spotted wing drosophila attacking ripening cherries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries while the fruit is still on the plant, rather than waiting for the kitchen-counter stage associated with common fruit flies.

When a Detection Changes the Map

If CDFA confirms an infestation, the state may establish a quarantine around the affected area. That can turn an ordinary harvest question into a movement question: where fruit can go, how it must be handled, and what paperwork or inspection may be required before loads leave the district.

For growers, the disruption would not be limited to the crop containing the fly. Packing schedules, field access, disposal decisions, and shipments moving through a quarantine zone could all become part of the response. The exact burden would depend on the pest, the host crop, the detection site, and the boundaries CDFA sets.
