Avocado trees routinely shed some young fruit, but a heavy round of abscission can leave fewer fruit to carry through the season. The research narrows attention to the hormonal changes accompanying that process, rather than treating immature drop as an unexplained loss between flowering and harvest.

That distinction matters because hormones can influence how a plant allocates resources and maintains developing fruit. In this case, the researchers found that changes in the seed coat’s hormonal condition were associated with fruit failing to remain attached. The result is a biological explanation for a problem growers see in the canopy, even if the decisive change happens out of sight.

From Mechanism to Orchard Practice

The practical promise is not a ready-made spray recommendation. It is a possible target. If researchers can determine which hormonal changes precede abscission, and when those changes occur, future work may be able to test ways of improving fruit retention. For growers, timing will likely be the difficult part.
