For years, a grower could look across a flowering crop and count on a quiet workforce already living in tree hollows, abandoned boxes, sheds, and wall cavities. The bees did not arrive with an invoice. That arrangement is now fraying across Australia.
The change is tied to varroa mite, a parasite that has established in parts of the country after earlier eradication efforts failed. The decline of feral honey bees is putting a free pollination service at risk, leaving horticultural producers to plan for a more deliberate system.
The Bees That Were Never on the Payroll
Feral colonies have long supplied pollination without a grower having to locate a beekeeper, reserve hives, or schedule their placement around bloom. Their work is easy to miss because it looks like background activity: bees moving between flowers while the rest of the farm gets on with irrigation, spraying, and harvest.
Varroa changes that calculation. The National Farmers' Federation and Australian Honey Bee Industry Council are urging growers to prepare rather than assume wild colonies will fill the gap. In New South Wales, authorities have abandoned attempts to eradicate the mite, a decision that has made long-term pollination planning harder to postpone.
Pollination Becomes a Line Item
The practical substitute is managed pollination: contracting beekeepers, securing colonies, and matching hive numbers and timing to the crop. That work takes coordination well before flowers open. It also turns an ecological service that many farms received incidentally into a purchased input, with the extra expense landing alongside labor, water, freight, and crop protection.
Growers are being advised to contact pollination providers early, discuss crop requirements, and include the service in budgets and production plans. The Queensland Fruit and Vegetable Growers' guidance frames varroa as a planning problem as much as a bee-health problem: a crop can be healthy, well-watered, and ready to pick, yet still set poorly if the insects do not arrive at the right time.
The scale of the risk will vary by crop, region, flowering window, and access to commercial hives. But the biological consequence is straightforward. If natural pollinators become scarcer and replacement colonies are not arranged, fruit and vegetable yields could fall across the country. Growers will need clearer information on local bee availability, contract terms, hive placement, and the biosecurity responsibilities that come with moving colonies.
The first useful conversation may be an unglamorous one: ask who will pollinate the crop, when the hives can be delivered, and what happens if a booking cannot be filled. Pollination providers are already warning growers not to rely on an informal supply of bees. The old workforce is still visible in the landscape, but it is no longer a dependable business plan.
